Upsala

Upsala, the former capital of Sweden, stands on the Sala, 45 miles N.W. of Stockholm, and is one of the most ancient cities of Scandinavia. The cathedral, in which the kings were crowned, dates from 1258, and the university was founded in 1477. There is also an ecclesiastical college; and the Archbishop of Upsala is Primate of Sweden. Besides the manufacture of silk fabrics and tobacco in small quantities and a little river trade, no commerce is carried on. It is the chief town of the laen or administrative district of the same name, has an area of 1,978 square miles, and contains important iron-mines.
