Udall

Udall, Nicholas (1505?-1556), earliest English comedy-writer, was born in Hampshire. He studied and graduated at Oxford, was ordained, and became head-Master of Eaton, and subsequently of Westminster School. His chief claim to renown is that he wrote about 1553 Ralph Roister-Doister, the earliest of English comedies. It is in rhyme, and only one printed copy of the original edition is known, but there are modern reprints.
