Tynemouth

Tynemouth, a parliamentary and municipal borough and watering-place of Northumberland, situated opposite South Shields, and eight miles east by north of Newcastle. the watering-place lies east of North Shields (q.v.), which is included in the borough, and has a fine sandy beach, nearly a mile in length, which makes it a favourite resort for bathing. The pier, which is more than half a mile long, was completed in 1892. Within the castle precincts are the remains of the priory of SS. Mary and Oswin, consisting chiefly of a church of Norman and Early English date.
