Tuaregs

Tuaregs (properly Targui; plural Tawarik), the collective Arabic name of the Berbers of the Sahara, whose real name is Imoshagh (q.v.). Although now universally adopted by Europeans the word Tuareg dates only from about the 14th century, occurring under the form Targa, for the first time in the writings of Ibn-Khaldun. It is of doubtful origin, though referred by some authorities to the word erghez, which means "man" in the Shluh (Berber) dialect of Morocco.
