Tacoma

Tacoma, a considerable port in the state of Washington, U.S.A., is situate upon the E. side of Puget Sound, and has developed during the last few years from a small village to its present importance. It lies to the W. of the northern range of the Cascade Mountains, which here rise to a height of 14,000 feet, and is 145 miles N. of Portland (Oregon). It is well served by railways, and has a large trade in tea with Japan, as well as in coal, iron, and lumber. The chief productions are wheat, hops, fruit, and vegetables. In the neighborhood are forests, and there are many Indians.
