Scheldt

Scheldt, or SCHELDE, THE, a river which rises near Catelet, Aisne, France, and flowing north for 75 miles, enters Belgium near Mortagne, and, after traversing Belgium to Antwerp, a distance of 137 miles, divides into two branches, the East and the West Scheldt, which pursue a further course of 37 miles through the Netherlands till they find their way by various estuaries into the German Ocean. It has upon its banks the towns of Cambray, Denain, Valenciennes, Fontenoy, Tonrnay, Oudenarde, Ghent, Dendermonde, and Antwerp, and is connected by canals with many other places, being navigable almost throughout its entire length.
