SaintsburySaintsbury, GEORGE EDWARD (b. 1845), critic, was born at Southampton and educated at King's College, London, and Oxford, where he graduated in 1868. For some years he held appointments as a master at various schools. He is known as the author of a Life of Dryden (1881), a Life of Ma1lborough (1885), and many other literary works, and is a great authority in England on French literature. In 1896 he was appointed Professor of English Literature at Edinburgh University.
