Sacramento

Sacramento, 1. The capital of California, stands on the left bank of the Sacramento river, 90 miles N.E. of San Francisco. The streets, which are broad, with trees on each side, are arranged on a rectangular plan. There are many handsome private dwellings with large gardens. The principal building is the State Capitol, a magnificent structure in a park of 50 acres. The works of the southern Pacific Railroad are situated here, and there are flower- and planing-mills and other factories.

2. A river of California, rises near the Oregon border, and flows S. between the Sierra Nevada and the Coast Range to Saisun Bay, a little above which it is joined by the San Joaquim from the S. It has a length of nearly 500 miles.
