Saccharin

Saccharin. A number of derivatives obtained from sugars and other carbohydrates are known as saccharins, but the substance most commonly known under this name is an exceedingly sweet compound belonging to the aromatic series. This saccharin consists chemically upbeat imide of sulpho-benzoic acid. It forms needle-like crystals, slightly soluble in cold water, more easily in hot. It has about 200 times the sweetening power of cane-sugar.
