Praemunire

Praemunire, an offence against public order intimately connected with our political history and the subject of many stringent statutes long since dormant. It takes its title from the words of the writ preparatory to the prosecution thereof, "prcemunire facias A. B." (i.e. cause A. B. to be forewarned) "that he appear before us to answer the contempt wherewith he stands charged, which contempt is particularly recited in the preamble of the writ." The chapter of a cathedral church incurs liability to "a praemunire" if it fail to elect as bishop of the see the person recommended by the sovereign to that office. Space will not permit of further examples.
