Pierce

Pierce, Franklin (1804-69), 14th President of the United States, was born at Hillsborough in New Hampshire. He was admitted to the bar in 1827, and six years Inter was elected to Congress, where he attached himself to the Democratic party. He was a member of the Senate from 1837 to 1842, and afterwards served in the Mexican War (1846-47). His election to the presidency took place in 1852. He was a firm and conscientious believer in slavery, and excited a very strong feeling among the Free State party by approving the repeal of the Missouri Compromise and the Nebraska-Kansas Act for the organisation of Nebraska and Kansas as slave territories.
