PanipatPanipat, an ancient ruined city in the Karnal district of the Punjab, India, 53 miles N. of Delhi. Its origin is traced to the mythical period of the Mahabharata; but in more modern times it is celebrated as the scene of three battles that are turning points in Indian history - viz. Baber's victory in 1526, Akbar's final assertion of Mogul power in 1556, and the blow that was dealt to the Mahratta supremacy by Ahmed Shah Durani in 1761. The modern town, standing high on the old bank of the Jumna, with the debris of former buildings as its foundation, is a poor and squalid place.
