Palgrave

Palgrave, Sir Francis (1788-1861), was the son of a stockbroker named Cohen. He assumed the name of Palgrave on his marriage. He published his Rise and Progress of the English Commcnwealth in 1832. He also wrote various other valuable historical works.

Francis Turner, LL.D., his son, was born in 1824, educated at Charterhouse and Balliol College, Oxford, and elected fellow of Exeter College. For five years he directed the Kneller Hall Training College, and then entered the Education Department. Palgrave was known in the literary world as a sympathetic editor and critic. Since 1883 he filled the chair of poetry at Oxford. He died in 1897.
