Mohl

Mohl, Julius (1800-76). Orientalist, was born at Stuttgart and studied theology at Tubingen. His love of Oriental learning drew him to Paris (1823), where he studied Arabic and Persian under De Sacy, and Chinese under Abel Remusat. He became professor of Oriental languages at Tubingen in 1820, but passed most of his time in Paris. In 1847 he was appointed professor of Persian at the College de France. His chief work was his monumental edition of the Shalt Nam eh of the Persian poet Firdausi. His annual reports to the Society Asiatique, which afford a valuable survey of contemporary research, were collected and edited by Mme. Mohl (ne'e Clarke), herself a literary lady of the highest eminence, whose salon was a centre of thought and refinement.
