Mariotte

Mariotte, Edme, a French physicist of the 17th century, was born in Burgun ly, where he was prior of St. Martin-sous-Beaune. He was one of the earliest members of the Academie des Sciences, and died at Paris in 1684. His most important work is Essais de Physique, containing the statement of the law of the pressure and volume of gases, yvhich was called "Mariotte's law," though discovered by Boyle. Collections of his works were published at Leyden in 1717, and at the Hague in 1740.
