Mackenzie, Sir AlexanderMackenzie, Sir Alexander, an explorer of N. America, born in Scotland, emigrated to Canada where he entered the service of the North-West Fur Company. His energy caused him to be appointed in 1789 to explore the tract north-west of Lake Athabasca. He then discovered and traced the Mackenzie river. In 1792 and 1793 he traversed the unknown regions between Upper Canada and the Pacific, encountering most serious hardships and dangers. He was knighted shortly after the account of his travels appeared in 1801.
