Kinglake

Kinglake, Alexander William (1809-91), historian, was born at Taunton, and educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was called to the bar in 1837, and represented Bridgewater as a Liberal from 1857 to 1868. In 1844 he published a graphic and picturesque volume of travels entitled Ebthen. His History of the War in the Crimea (eight volumes, 1863-87), one of the most brilliant historical works in the English language, was based on the most careful inquiry into details as well as on his personal observations; but many critics regard it as coloured by an over-great admiration of his friend, Lord Raglan.
