Khokand

Khokand, the capital of the ancient khanate of the same name, lies in the Ferghana valley, 10 miles S. of the river Sir-Daria. There are mosques. bazaars, schools, and other public buildings, and a largo trade is carried mi in cotton and grain, grown in the neighbourhood. The immediate vicinity of the city - where (ho soil, originally sterile, has become fertile through irrigation occupied chiefly by fruit-gardens. Since its annexation to Russia, the knanate has formed the government of Ferghana. t
