Hervey

Hervey, James (1714-58). an English clergyman and author, was born near Northampton, and was educated at Oxford. He took orders, and was appointed curate of Dummer in Hampshire in 1736.

In 173S he went to Stoke Abbey, Devon, and here it was that he planned the Meditatiims by which he is chiefly known, and which were composed among the tombs of a Cornish churchyard. His works were published in six volumes, and his letters and memoir in 1760.
