HaidukHaiduk, or Hajduk (Hungarian a drover), a Hungarian soldier, belonging to the irregular infantry, who in the 16th century carried on a border warfare against the Turks. Their adhesion to the Protestant cause was in 1605 rewarded by Stephen Bocskai, Prince of Transylvania, with the privileges of nobility, the right of self-government, and a district on the left bank of the Theiss, enlarged in 1876, and now the county of Haiduk.
