HaddingtonHaddington, the capital of Haddingtonshire, Scotland, is nearly in the centre of the county on the river Tyne. 17 miles E. of Edinburgh. It has one of the chief grain-markets in Scotland, and its abbey-church, called "The Lamp of Lothian" (Lucerna Laudoniae), is of great antiquity. This royal burgh, which was several times burnt in the wars with England, was the birthplace of John Knox, and of Jane Welsh, wife of Carlyle.
