Gyges

Gyges, King of Lydia, dethroned Candaules and founded a new dynasty in 687 R. c. It would appear that with Carian and other mercenaries he overcame the opposition of the natives, and was confirmed in his position by the reply of the Delphic oracle. Inscriptions show him to have been a tributary to the King of Assyria, who aided him against his foes, the Cimmerians.
