Groat

Groat, a mediaeval coin worth fourpence. The name is derived from the old Low German word grote. "great," which is said to have been used in the first instance to describe certain coins of Bremen of a larger size than was usual. The first English silver groats were coined in the reign of Henry III. The coinage ceased in 1662.
