Gerard Baron Francois Pascal

Gerard, Baron Francois Pascal (1770-1837), was born in Rome, his father being attached to the French embassy there. At 12 years old he came to Paris, and entered the studio of the sculptor Pajou, leaving it afterwards for that of the painter, Brenet, and then for that of David. He then was in Rome for a time, and then in Paris, where he aided David in his portrait-painting. In 1794 his Tenth of Auyust won a prize. In 1795 appeared his Belisarius, followed by Psyche et L'Amour in 1797. He had now achieved fame, but prcsperity did not suit him, and his work degenerated in quality. He painted many notable portraits.
