Francs Tireurs

Francs-Tireurs ("free-shooters"), a name given to irregular infantry (originally bands of peasants) during the Franco-German War. They were at first not recognised by the Germans as belligerents, and, when captured, were shot; but were afterwards formed into a regular corps, and as such obtained a military standing.
