Evans

Evans, Sib De Lacy (1787-1870), an English general. He went young to India as an ensign, and saw some service there. In 1812 he went to the Peninsula, and took part in many of the chief engagements. In 1814 he went to America, where he was wounded, and arrived in Europe in time to take part in the battle of Quatre Bras. After the peace he gave his attention to politics, being ardent in the cause of Reform. In 1830 he sat in Parliament for Rye, and in 1833 for Westminster. In 1835 he took command of 10,000 troops, who were raised by permission of the Government to take part in the Spanish war against the Carlists, and he made good soldiers of them. In 1837 he was made K.C.B., and in 1846 Major-General. He took part in the Crimean War, and was present at Alma, Inkermann, and Sebastopol. He received the thanks of Parliament, the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour, and the G.C.B. He then returned to politics and Parliaenent.
