Endogens

Endogens, a name formerly applied to Monocotyledons (q.v.) from the erroneous notion that in this class of flowering plants the growth in thickness of the stem was endogenous, or from without inwards, in contradistinction to that of Exogens (q.v.). The origin of roots is correctly termed endogenous, since they are formed internally and force their way out through the outer layers of tissue.
