Elyot

Elyot, Sir Thomas (d. 1546), an English man of letters, born in Suffolk or in Wiltshire, and educated at Oxford or at Cambridge. He was Clerk of Assize on the Western Circuit, and afterwards clerk of the King's Council, and was employed on different embassies. Most of his life, however, seems to have been passed in a struggle with poverty. He had much reputation as a scholar, his chief works being a Latin Dictionary of encyclopaedic nature, and the Governor, a book treating at length the education and bringing up of the young.
