Elsinore

Elsinore, a Danish seaport on the island of Zealand, on the Sound, which is here 3? miles broad. It is 24 miles W. of Copenhagen, and has two churches, a school, and a custom house. The inhabitants are engaged in commerce, seafaring, and in traffic with Helsingborg, the Swedish town on the opposite side of the Sound. The Castle of Kronborg, built by Frederick II. (1580), commands the Sound, and till the redemption of the Sound dues in 1857, all vessels bad to salute the Castle and pay toll there. There is a good view from the lighthouse, which has a fixed light at a height of 113 feet.
