Dombrowski Jan Henryk

Dombrowski, Jan Henryk (1755-1818), a Polish general who did great service in the wars of Napoleon. He supported Kosciusko's rising in 1794, and when the Russians took Warsaw Dombrowski was treated with distinction by Suwarrow, who gave him free passage into Germany. In 1796 he entered the French service, and fought well at the head of the Polish legion in the Italian campaigns 1796-1801. He took part in the Russian campaign of 1812, and in 1813 distinguished himself at Leipzig. After the fall of Napoleon he went to Poland, and Alexander I. of Russia made him a Polish senator. He wrote a History of the Polish Legion in Italy (2 vols.).
