Dance

Dance, Sir Nathaniel, a distinguished seaman in the service of the East India Company, was born in London in 1748, and was grandson of George Dance, the City architect. He went to sea in 1759, and in 1804, being then commodore, he left Canton with a large fleet for Europe. On Feb. 15 he was attacked by Admiral Linois, with live ships of war; but after a smart action he drove off the immensely superior force of the enemy in a manner which earned him the honour of knighthood from the king, and from the Court of Directors 2,000 guineas and a piece of plate.
