D'Entrecasteaux

D'Entrecasteaux. 1. Channel, on the S.E. coast of Tasmania, separating Brune Island from the mainland. It has a length of 35 miles from N. to S., and a breadth varying from 3 to 9 miles. The rivers Derwent and Huron flow into it. 2. Islands, a group in the Louisiade Archipelago of the S.E. extremity of New Zealand, lat. 10 S., long. 151 E. 3. Cape, at the S.W. extremity of Australia, between Albany and Cape Leeuwin. All the above are named after the French navigator, who lived from 1740 to 1793.
