Culverin

Culverin (Fr. couleuvrine, from couleuvre, serpent), an ancient name for a cannon. In the early part of the sixteenth century it strictly denoted a heavy gun very much resembling the later much-praised "long eighteen." The word is also used loosely to denote any small early gun.
