Creche

Creche (French creche, a manger), originally a foundling hospital, so called from the manger in Bethlehem where Christ was laid. Afterwards the term was transferred to a sort of charitable nursery, at which mothers might leave their children during the day for a small payment while they are at work. Creches of this sort are now common in England and America.
