Corona

Corona, or Coronet. 1. A term applied to the whorl of hair-like appendages to the petals of the passion-flowers and to the similarly ligular structures that unite to form the cup or tube in the flower of Narcissus. It is also applied to the five teeth round the apex of the archegonium (nucule) in the Characeae (q.v.), each composed of one cell in Chara, of two in Nitella.

2. In astronomy, is a very remarkable feature in an eclipse of the sun. The corona is an aureole of light surrounding the black mass of the interposed moon, extending for several degrees from the surface, and exhibiting radial projections of varying brightness.
