Coregonus

Coregonus, a genus of Salmonida. with about forty species, from the northern parts of temperate Europe, Asia, and N. America. The body is compressed and covered with scales of moderate size; the teeth are very small or absent; the dorsal fin is small and the caudal deeply forked. Most of them are found in lakes and rivers, and a few descend to the sea like salmon. The American species are known as white-fish. C. clupeoides, C. vandesius, and C. pollan, occur in the United Kingdom.
