Chlorimetry

Chlorimetry, the estimation of free chlorine present in a substance; especially the determination of the available chlorine of bleaching powder. Most chlorimetric processes consist in the volumetric measurement of the quantity of a standard solution of some reagent which can be oxidised by a known weight of the substance. This is the case with Bunsen's and Penot's methods. A ready method also is to estimate the volume of oxygen liberated from hydrogen peroxide, in which case by the use of a right weight of the substance each cubic centimetre of oxygen indicates 1 per cent. of chlorine present.
