Chandos

Chandos, an English family that traces its descent to a follower of William the Conqueror. A leading member was James Brydges, born 1673, who was created Duke of Chandos in 1719. Having held the office of paymaster of the forces abroad from 1707 to 1712 he was enabled to build a palace at Canons, near Edgware, at a cost of £200,000. Here Handel lived for two years. On the duke's death the palace was pulled down. Later the title passed into the Grenville family, the representatives of which are the Dukes of Buckingham and Chandos.
