Chabas

Chabas, Francois (1817-1882), a French Egyptologist, who, born at Briancon, was first engaged in commerce, but giving much of his time to study, became a great linguist, and in 1851 gave himself up to the deciphering of hieroglyphics. In 1856 he issued his first publication, and in a valuable series of works did much towards elucidating two important periods of Egyptian history - the conquest of the country by the Hyksos, and their expulsion. For four years he was editor of L'Egyptologie.
