Catanzaro

Catanzaro, the capital of the province of Calabria Ulteriore II., stands on a height about five miles from the shore of the Gulf of Squillace, and 30 miles S.E. of Cosenza. It has an old castle, built by Robert Guiscard, a cathedral, several convents, a royal academy of sciences, and other buildings. The chief manufactures are woollen and silk goods, and velvets, and corn, wine, and walnut oil are largely exported. The place was successfully defended against the French under Lautrec in 1515. but was almost destroyed by an earthquake in 1783.
