Calverley

Calverley, Charles Stuart, versifier, was born in 1833. He was the son of the Rev. Henry Blayds, who took the name of Calverley in 1852. He graduated at Cambridge in 1856, and was called to the bar in 1865, but an accident prevented him from following the legal profession. His fame mainly rests on two small volumes, Verses and Translations, 1862, and Fly Leaves, 1872. As a humorist he was unrivalled, and his translations from the Latin into English, and English into Latin, display a rare classical scholarship. He died in 1884.
