CairnesCairnes John Elliot, political economist, was born in 1824 at Drogheda, Ireland. Educated at Trinity College, Dublin, he became Whately Professor in Dublin in 1856, Professor of Political Economy in Queen's College, Galway, in 1859, and in 1886 Professor of Political Economy in University College, London. His writings display originality and independence of thought, and are written in a vigorous style. The chief are, Logical Method of Political Economy, and Some Leading Principles of Political Economy Newly Expounded. He died in 1875, having resigned his position in University College in 1872 through ill-health.
