Blind Fish

Blind Fish, a popular name for any fish in which the eyes are rudimentary or absent. It is chiefly applied to the blind fish of the mammoth cave of Kentucky (Amblyopsis spelaeus), which occurs also in the subterranean rivers of the central portion of the United States. It is about 5 inches long, quite colourless, and destitute of external eyes. Forms without ventral fins have been made a distinct genus (Typhlichthys) Chologaster, an allied form, with small external eyes, has been recorded from a rice field in South Carolina. In Lucifuga dentata, from the subterranean waters of caverns in Cuba, the eye is absent or quite rudimentary.
