Bitonto

Bitonto (anc. Butuntum), a fortified city in the province of Terra di Bari, Italy. It is the seat of a bishopric, has a fine cathedral, an ancient castle, and a considerable trade in olive oil and Zagarelle wine. Though an old town, it cannot be traced in classical times, and became known in the Middle Ages for its Accademia degl'Inflammati. A pyramid marks the scene of the defeat of the Austrians in 1735 by the Spaniards, under Mortemar.
