Bethany

Bethany (Heb. the house of dates), a village on the eastern flank of the Mount of Olives, 2,200 feet above the sea-level. It is frequently mentioned in the New Testament and was the home of Lazarus, and his sisters, Martha and Mary. The modern name, Lazarieh, preserves this fact. During the Crusades it became the seat of a monastic establishment, which dragged on a decaying existence up to a recent date.
