Barbier Henri Auguste

Barbier, Henri Auguste, born in Paris in 1805, and educated for the bar, was inspired by the ferment of July, 1830, to write in the papers vigorous political verses. His Iambes, a more sustained effort, followed. Lazare and Le Minotaure were suggested by the social state of London. He tried his hand at translating Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, was elected to the Academy in 1869, dying in 1882. Of his works only the Iambes will survive.
