Baltimore

Baltimore, an important city in Maryland, United States of America, on the north side of the Patapsco river, the bay of the same name forming a convenient harbour. It is 37 miles N.E. of Washington and 100 miles S.W. of Philadelphia, and, together with the county in which it stands, derives its name from the Earl of Baltimore, to whom the colony of Maryland was granted in 1631. The city, which was founded in 1729, now covers an area of more than 10,000 acres, and is famous for its fine public buildings and monuments, amongst which are the City Hall, the John Hopkins University, the Peabocdy Institute, the Roman Catholic Cathedral, with numerous colleges, churches, hospitals, and theatres; the Washington Statue, and the Battle Monument. The flour market is one of the largest in the States, and tobacco is a valuable export. Brick-making, iron-founding, ship-building, brewing, and the manufacture of woollen and cotton goods are important industries; and the oysters of Chesapeake Bay are a great source of profit. Baltimore is connected by railway with all parts of North America.
