Ava

Ava, the capital of the Burmese Empire from 1364 to 1740, and from 1822 to 1838, is situated on the Irawadi river at the confluence of the Mytnge and the Myltha, which wash the city on the E., S., and W. It is about six miles below Amarapura, the old, and Mandalay, the present capital. The earthquake of 1839 almost destroyed the place, but a few great temples and a royal palace remain.
