Anderson John

Anderson, John, born 1726, one of the earliest promoters of sciontific education for working men, and the founder of the Andersonian University in Glasgow. He was professor at first of Eastern languages, and afterwards of natural philosophy in that university, and wrote an excellent treatise on Physics. Sympathising with the National Convention of France, he hit upon the device of conveying news from that country to Germany by means of small gas balloons. He died in 1796.
