Alexander IIIPope

Alexander III., Pope, the successor of Adrian IV. as Pope in 1159. The Emperor Frederick I. set up a rival, but, supported by England, France, and the Roman clergy, Alexander held his own and excommunicated the Emperor, who had at last to give way. Alexander took the part of Thomas A' Becket against Henry II., and canonised him after his death. He died in 1181.
